Museum Mission Statement
"The mission of the Steamboat Art Museum is to promote and present the visual arts to the community of Northwest Colorado reflecting and enhancing our culture and heritage."
Background: Steamboat Art Museum was formed in December of 2005. In 2006 the City of Steamboat Springs was given the historic First National Bank building located in downtown Steamboat Springs.
The gift was from the estate of Helen Rehder, a long-time area rancher and artist, who stipulated that the building be used as a museum. SAM has signed a 99-year lease with the City for the entire building and is undertaking restoration of the historic building.
The Steamboat Art Museum (SAM) opened its doors in 2006 and has since then held 28 successful exhibitions. More than 87,000 people from every state and 13 foreign countries have visited us.

Welcome to the Steamboat Art Museum! Now in its tenth year, the Museum has made great strides since its Opening Exhibit back in 2006 and we now celebrating with our 10th Anniversary Exhibit. We want to bring you up to date on the progress that has been made on a major transformation planned for the Museum that will double our current space and provide for more exhibits, programs, and workshops. This transformation will raise the level of visual arts in Steamboat to round out and complement the available cultural opportunities of our community, including music, dance, theater, opera and communication arts.
The Museum occupies the Rehder Building, one of the most historic properties in downtown Steamboat and has, since its founding in 2005---relying primarily on volunteer effort---managed to remodel the front galleries, conduct thirty exhibits, open a Museum store, conduct outreach and educational programs, and host an aggregate of more than 80,000 visitors. We feel we have made good on our stated mission “to collect, preserve and present fine art to the public, with a focus on the culture and heritage of Northwestern Colorado.”
Now, we are embarking on an expansion that you can read more about in our future plans section. But expansion and renovation alone does not complete the transformation. The Museum needs to substantially increase its membership to support the increased costs of operating a larger facility and to hire and retain a full-time Executive Director. So we are asking for continuing contributions to a Capital Campaign as well as looking for sustaining members of the Museum.
