The Steamboat Art Museum will host a weeklong Plein Air Event from June 11th to June 18th while the wildflowers are blooming in abundance. Events include an opening reception, artist gatherings, and a quick draw with silent auction.

Join us on Saturday, June 11, 2016, when artists from near and far will convene in Steamboat Springs, CO (pop. 12,000) for the summer SAM Plein Air Paint Out and Quick Draw Event. The Steamboat Art Museum is proud to host this event during this glorious time of year when the trees and mountains are at their greenest and the wildflowers are in bloom. What makes this Plein Air Event unique is the friendly atmosphere of Steamboat, with easy access to historical ranches, wild rivers, and abundant aspen groves. This non-juried event not only provides opportunities for emerging artists to develop their career, but we also attract several nationally-known painters.
Open to all artists 18 years and older. This is a non-juried event.
Entry Form and Fee:
The 2016 SAM Plein Air is open for artist registration until Friday June 3, 2016.
Entry fee is $25 per person for SAM Members and $35 per person for SAM Non-Members. Requested data will include the submission of your name and contact information and a bio/resume. The entry fee includes one ticket to the Quick Draw Event located at an historic ranch near town. Food and drink are included, along with your entry to the Quick Draw competition.
SAM Exhibition Details:
All artwork must be completed in the Steamboat area between Saturday June 11 and Friday June 17, 2016. Canvases will be stamped with an approved insignia on Saturday June 11, 2016. Only artwork with this stamp will be permitted in the Exhibition & Sale that opens on Saturday June 17, 2016 from 5-8 PM. In addition, all works must be suitably framed with proper backing. Wire hangers or a suitable hanging device must be attached and ready to hang. Artists can paint as many paintings as they wish, but will only be able to submit three (3) paintings for the Exhibit and Sale.
This event is a fundraiser for the Steamboat Art Museum, a 501(c)(3) non-profit. The sale takes place inside the main gallery of the Museum from Friday June 17 through Saturday July 30, 2016. The Steamboat Art Museum will retain 40 percent of all sales revenue generated throughout the sale. Payments for all work sold will be mailed shortly after the exhibition closes.
Artists are responsible for providing their own lodging and as well as transportation to and from Steamboat Springs, Colorado. If an artist needs assistance with lodging, please contact SAM (at) steamboatartmuseum.org. If SAM is able to work with a local lodging property or management company and offer discount lodging, we will post information here and let the registered artists know.
Awards of Excellence:
Main Street Criteria: The painting that best illustrates the unique character of Downtown Steamboat. The area considered to be "Main Street is from 3rd to 13th streets Oak to Yampa Street.
Historic Routt County Criteria: The award given to the artist whose plein air painting best represents, captures, and celebrates the rich heritage of Routt County.
Communitt Agricultural Alliance Criteria: The award given to the artist whose plein air painting best represents, captures, and celebrates the rich heritage of the agricultural scene.
SAM Plein Air Paint Out Calendars:
June 11, 2016 (9AM to 12PM): Artists Check-In and get canvases stamped
June 11 to June 17: Painting in and around the Routt County Area
June 17 (9AM to 12PM): Artists turn in a maximum of three (3) complete paintings.
June 17 (5PM to 8PM): Plein Air Opening Reception & Sale
June 18: Quick Draw and Silent Auction
9AM - 10 AM: Artist Check In
10AM - 12PM: Quick Draw Painting
12:30PM - 1:30PM: Silent Auction
2:30PM: Event Ends
July 30: Artists must pick up unsold pieces or arrange shipping

Quick Draw & BBQ
Saturday, June 18, 2016; 9AM-2PM
What: An existing timed painting event in which artists have two-hours to start and finish a painting on location. The starting bell rings at 10am sharp.
Tickets: $35 pp, Kids under 12 are FREE
