From the Executive Director

featuring David M. Taylor, Denise Labadie,

Madeleine Vail and Jackie Grimaldi

We are proud to present The Art of the Quilt at the Steamboat Art Museum.  When this exhibition was originally scheduled, we never imagined how appropriate our timing would be as our community “re-opens”.   Quilts, throughout history, have been used to comfort, protect, provide warmth, tell a story, add artistic charm, and in their creation, bring people together.  Assembled from many pieces, layered and stitched, quilts embody the principal that the whole is stronger than its parts, an important reminder for all of us as we pull together to move forward.

This exhibition features the work of four noted Colorado fiber artists/quilters/sewists / teachers - each with their distinct styles and subject matter – from traditional to contemporary.  Denise Labadie makes contemporary art quilt portraits of very non-contemporary structures utilizing her hand painted fabrics vividly reflecting the rough structure of the ancient stone formations.  We welcome her work, joining three artists who have been a strong part of the Steamboat quilting community for over two decades sharing inspiration, creativity and friendship.  Madeleine Vail was the catalyst for David Taylor’s quilt addiction over 20 years ago.  Madeleine and Jackie Grimaldi have creatively collaborated with Jackie’s focus on the designs and assembling, finished with Madeleine’s quilting artistry.   The work of these artists provides an explosion of color, texture, design and patterns - truly representing the art of the quilt.

Quilts: Testament to Community is the theme of our exhibition in the Cole Verploeg Youth Gallery, filled with Routt County histories, stories (old and new), and award winning as well as personal, family quilts and antique quilts from community members.  We hope you will gain a new understanding of what the quilting process and the final product represent for the individual, as well as community.
